SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- A fire marshal says a fire early Saturday started when a teenager accidentally set his mattress on fire.

Firefighters were called out just after 1 a.m. to the 1000 block of South Crutcher Avenue near Glenstone Avenue at Grand Street. The first unit arrived to find flames shooting out the front of the house.

Investigators say the 14-year-old was trying to find something under his mattress with a cigarette lighter when the bed caught fire. The boy's mother was treated on the scene for minor respiratory problems.
