The Pat Jones YMCA is now offering Les Mills' Body Pump. It's a workout that combines cardio and weights with music to burn more calories while building muscle.
KY3's Maria Neider has been doing this workout for weeks. She caught up with YMCA trainer Jay Johnson before one Tuesday night class. "It's the most fun you'll ever have lifting weights. You can burn anywhere from 600 to about 1,000 calories depending on the weights you use," Johnson explains. He warns the class to choose that weight wisely, since the workout can mean anywhere from 900 to 1,000 reps.
The full body workout goes from a brief warmup, to sets of lunges, squats, curls and crunches, and ends with a cool down. Each muscle group workout is paired with a specific music track so the repetitions are choreographed with the beat. "My favorite part of it is the music," says Johnson. "If you just sing and you enjoy the class you won't even feel the pain."
Members of his evening classes say Jay's energy, sense of humor and singing brings them back to feel the burn again. What started out as a class of six has turned into an army of 30 or 40 people-- raising the bar to a healthier body.
The group ranges in age from teenagers to seniors sweating it out and motivated to make a change in the new year. You'll find Jay pumping it up at the Pat Jones YMCA every Tuesday and Thursday night at 6:45.
