SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- Thirty-five passengers riding a Greyhound bus were stranded in the heat, forced to wait for hours after their bus broke down on Interstate 44. The bus was headed from St. Louis to Tulsa and was scheduled to stop in Springfield about 1:45 p.m. Wednesday. It was about six hours late getting to Springfield. Passengers spent a miserable day along I-44, made a little better by compassionate strangers, but they're not happy with the bus company. Their bus broke down at about 12:30 p.m. near Lebanon. Passengers say they spent about four hours in the blazing heat on the side of the road before a church bus took them to the nearest truck stop. The American Red Cross and a local business provided some drinks and snacks for the group. They spent a couple more hours at the truck stop before a replacement Greyhound bus picked them up. Passengers called KY3 and spoke with a reporter after they arrived at the bus station in Springfield at 8 p.m. "They left us out there stranded. They didn't care if any of our elderly people that were out there had heat stroke. Our children have all been throwing up. We fed them at the truck stop, and they threw up their food. This was an experience that should have never happened," said passenger Mae Denson. A Greyhound spokesperson confirmed in a telephone interview that there was a delay of about five hours because of a bus breakdown, and apologized for the inconvenience, but couldn't say why it took so long for another bus to arrive.
