LITTLE ROCK, Ark. -

Republican gubernatorial nominee Asa Hutchinson says he'll pay Pulaski County more than $1,700 for improperly claimed homestead tax credits.

Hutchinson told the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette on Wednesday that he isn't bowing to Democratic pressure and wants to bring closure to the issue.  He says he will pay $350 for the tax credit that he improperly received in 2008, plus $1,400 in penalties even though the statute of limitations has expired.

Hutchinson simultaneously claimed the tax credit in both Pulaski and Benton counties for tax years 2008 through 2011.  State law allows the credit on only one home.

The newspaper reports that Hutchinson's statement came hours after Democratic gubernatorial nominee Mike Ross and the state Democratic Party chairman called on him to make the payment.
