ST. LOUIS, Mo. -

The St. Louis Cardinals made a move Thursday it hopes leads them back to the postseason.

The Redbirds Thursday traded former Springfield Cardinals and starters Joe Kelly and Allen Craig for Boston Red Sox pitcher John Lackey.

The Red Sox starting pitcher was considered one of the top trade deadline players on the move.  He is 11-7 with a 3.60 ERA for the struggling Red Sox in 2014.   The veteran right-hander has plenty of postseason experience with both Boston and the Los Angeles Angels.

Craig was a Cardinals fan favorite throughout their postseason runs the past few seasons.  He was hitting only .237 in 2014 in 97 games.  Craig signed a five year, $30 million deal last season.  The deal to move Craig signals more playing time for outfield prospect and former Springfield Cardinals star Oscar Taveras.

Kelly is 2-2 with a 4.37 ERA in just seven starts in 2014.  He spent much of the 2014 season on the disabled list.

The Cardinals acquired Justin Masterson from the Cleveland Indians for Springfield Cardinals prospect James Ramsey.
