SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -

City police say a man crashed a stolen truck after trying to steal a motorcycle and that led to a four-hour standoff on Tuesday morning just north of the downtown area.

Police were called to a vacant home near Douglas Avenue at Nichols Street around 5:30 a.m.  After crashing the truck, the driver ran into the vacant home.

Police say James Varnum, 29, of Springfield, faces a list of drug charges. He also had a warrant for his arrest that a judge issued in June for failing to appear in court on a charge of driving with a revoked license.

"We realized the vehicle was stolen and the house was vacant and he wasn't supposed to be there.  We were able to early on make contact with the subject inside the house and through negotiation eventually got him to come out,” said Springfield Police Lt. Todd Revell.

The standoff ended with Varnum in custody.  New charges are pending.
