SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -

Springfield police say a man who barricaded himself in a home in the 1000 block of East Cherokee Street died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound on Thursday morning, ending a situation that began 12 hours earlier.

Springfield Police Department spokeswoman Lisa Cox said officers first responded to a home at 1032 E. Cherokee St. at 7:46 Wednesday evening.  Cox said other people came out of the home on officers' request, but Springfield Police Capt. Ben King said the man inside the home died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound at roughly 5:30 a.m.

Police declined to name the man who died, but a deputy U.S. Marshal said the man inside the home was Paul Lee.

Lee is suspected of crimes including unlawful possession of a firearm, resisting or interfering with an arrest, violating a protection order and aggravated stalking.

The operation was a joint effort between the Springfield Police Department and the U.S. Marshals Service.

An autopsy was scheduled for Friday.  City police didn't plan to name the man until after the autopsy.
