Mercy Health will lay off more than 200 people across its network of hospitals. A Mercy Springfield representative confirms the layoffs will be spread across the company’s 40,000 employees in seven states including Missouri and Arkansas.

In an email, Senior Media Relations Specialist Sonya Kullmann writes, “Like all health care providers, Mercy is managing the impact of market changes, including reimbursement reductions from government and commercial payers, as well as lack of Medicaid expansion in most of the states we serve. We have been expecting and preparing for these changes for several years and have made tremendous progress in redesigning the health delivery system to meet evolving needs.”

Kullmann adds that Mercy has consolidated many non-patient care support services to streamline operations and achieve greater efficiencies. The expected layoffs will total 200 to 300 positions later this month. Kullmann says the departments affected are in support functions and so direct patient care areas will not be affected.

It is not yet know how many of the layoffs will come from the almost 10,000 people employed by Mercy Springfield.
