The Missouri State Highway Patrol is investigating a crash north of Springfield on Thursday morning. One of the drivers died at a hospital three-and-a-half hours after the crash.
The crash involved two southbound vehicles on Missouri 13 near Highway BB about 8 a.m. The Highway Patrol says a pickup driven by Ethan Ellis, 22, of Bolivar, hit the back of a car driven by Robert Jones, 71, of Brighton. Jones' car went off the right side of the road.
An air ambulance took Jones to a hospital in Springfield. Troopers say he died about 11:30 a.m.
Troopers say Ellis refused treatment at the scene. Troopers arrested him for an outstanding misdemeanor warrant held by the Aurora Police Department.
Edited news release from Greene County Sheriff's Department:
A sheriff's deputy assisted with the accident on Missouri 13 at Highway BB, about a mile south of the county line. The injured driver was flown to a hospital in Springfield.
Inside the car was the driver's traveling companion, a small Chihuahua dog, which had been pinned from the collision. The dog had injuries to the face and head.
After being turned down by several veterinary clinics, Deputy Justin Adamson contacted the veterinary office that he uses for his own dogs. A veterinarian there offered to examine the injured dog.
Adamson took the dog to the Home Town Veterinary Clinic, where the vet determined he did not have any obvious external injuries but still took x-rays and offered to care for the dog until Jones' family could make other arrangements.
Thanks to his kindness and willingness to go above and beyond the "normal" call of duty, Adamson made sure both Jones and his family dog received the necessary medical attention they needed.
