Area students will receive needed school supplies and clothing for the upcoming school year through the Salvation Army’s 2014 Back-to-School Assistance Program on Monday.
Each year, The Salvation Army helps local children start the school year off right by providing them with basic school supplies, backpacks, shoes, haircuts and clothing from its thrift stores. 1,062 children will receive assistance on Monday representing 447 households.
"We hope that the assistance we provide helps level the playing field for these children," Major Normalene Daniels, Springfield Associate Corps Officer said. "While we can't supply everything for them, we try to help these children with at least the basic items they'll need for the first day of school and for many of them these very basic items are all that they'll have."
Distribution will take place beginning 9:00a.m. at our main location at 1707 West Chestnut Expressway. In total nearly 17,000 items will distributed to area children
