SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -

Springfield City Council will consider proposals they say are aimed at improving the downtown area.

Council will discuss whether to make the Park Central Square area a tobacco-free zone, but exclude sidewalk cafes from the ordinance. Another change under consideration would revamp laws restricting panhandling in the city; under that change, you'd have to stay at least 20 feet away from businesses and ATMs.

Council will also weigh discussion on a possible ban on skateboards on certain downtown sidewalks.

Citizens will have a chance to comment on both proposals at Monday evening's regularly-scheduled City Council meeting. That begins at 6:30 at Historic City Hall on Boonville Avenue, just north of Chestnut Expressway.
