Enrollment for federally mandated health insurance started Monday and the two major hospitals in Springfield have yet to sign anyone up.

Wokers say computer glitches are stalling the process.

CoxHealth has more than a dozen Certified Application Counselors or CACs to take calls and help people enroll.

"We are getting a lot of calls, probably a couple hundred a day," said Heather Swearengin with CoxHealth.

They can give information, but they can't complete the process.

"We want to help people. That's hard when people call and they are nervous and they don't understand what's going on and they are not sure if they are going to get help. We want to be able to do that, so it's very frustrating that we can't," said Swearengin.

The same goes for Mercy.

"I think that the system is so bogged down and indicated with a lot of people requesting the same info. That's all the info I'm getting at this point that there's just a lot of traffic and not enough people to process," said Georgia Cable with Mercy.

Health experts say people should educate themselves now so they can make the best decision for their families.

"We can talk to people. Educate them on what's going on and what the options are.  What they need to be doing. We are collecting information so we can call people back when the website is up and running.  So we can get people specific information and get them enrolled," said Swearengin.

Late Friday afternoon it was announced that the application functions of the health care reform website will be unavailable during off-peak hours this weekend for repairs.


If people plan to talk to a counselor, they ask to have social security numbers and W2's or paystubs handy.

December 15 is the deadline to enroll for next year's coverage.

Just under 400 people have signed up statewide in Arkansas.
