SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -

Chris Adams took the oath of office on Friday morning as Springfield’s 33rd postmaster.  She is the second woman to hold that position since John Polk Campbell became Springfield’s first postmaster in 1834.  She has been acting postmaster for several weeks.

Adams is a 17-year postal veteran and an experienced manager of mail processing, customer services and delivery operations.  She began her postal career in October 1997 as a mail handler in Waterloo, Iowa.  Adams transitioned into management in 2000 and worked in several managerial capacities in Hawkeye and Mid America Districts.  Adams was most recently a manager of distribution operations in both Des Moines, Iowa, and Springfield.

Adams oversees deliveries for 117,000 customers associated with the Springfield Post Office.  She administers an annual budget of $44 million, including three delivery units and three retail offices.  The Post Office in Springfield employs 550 people.

Adams and her husband, Bob, have four children and four grandchildren.
