Some voters in Christian and Taney counties will see school tax levy questions with some confusing language.

“A yes vote will not raise taxes. A no vote will not lower taxes,” said Tim Taylor, superintendent of the Hollister School District.

Taylor hopes his patrons will read a flyer distributed by the Parent Teacher Organization. Parents and faculty distributed the notice knowing how important and how confusing the ballot is.

“You read it, (it says) we'll raise taxes. That's not it,” said Taylor.

What the Hollister School District is requesting is exactly what the Ozark School District is requesting. The property tax will not change for taxpayers. What the schools request is to be able to adjust those funds they receive, lowering their Debt Fund levies and raising their Operating Fund levies by the same amount.

The potential of growth in both Hollister and Ozark prompted the request for the transfer. Money will go to the operating fund, which will go into hiring more teachers, buying books, technology, and of course, diesel fuel for buses.

As for the money being taken out of the debt funds, growth also has a role in helping that.

“Thanks to our growth, the increase to property value coming in, we'll be okay,” said Taylor.
