The Democratic National Convention kicked off in Denver Monday, with Barack Obama's wife headlining the speakers on night one. Michelle Obama kicked off the convention with a specific goal: to convey her and her husband's story is an authentic American story. And try to convey to doubters, and skeptics, that this family is more like you than you might think. She talked about being raised on the south side of Chicago. The struggles of working class families. She talked about how Barack Obama was raised in Hawaii, raised by his grandparents. She repeatedly used the word values. This was really important to show their biographies to a national audiences, and then she transitioned into his vision for the country, and that her husband can bring the country together and remind us how alike we are. Missouri Senator Claire McCaskill also had a prime time speaking role. She called Missouri not a red state, or blue state, but part of the United States. She told her story about growing up with modest means in rural Missouri and said it's much like Obama's story. But she also took time to attack Obama's opponent, John McCain.
