SPRINGFIELD -- Former Marine and current military commentator Oliver North said President Obama should deliver the troops requested by generals to win the war in Afghanistan.  North made his comments here on Thursday night.  He helped raise money for The Vitae Foundation, a group that promotes alternatives to abortion.

North's comments come at a delicate time for the war. Obama is weighing the hefty decision of whether to send more troops. Critics now worry the president's gone wobbly on his previous commitment to boost resources in that country.

North just returned from another trip to Afghanistan.  He offered a stark warning to Washington.

"They had better pay up when it comes to the resources necessary to win this war, because, if we don't win this war, you and I and my kids and grandkids are going to be vulnerable to another attack like we saw on 9/11," said North.

Attacks by the enemy have ramped up on our troops in Afghanistan in recent months, dropping public support for an escalation.  But, as the president considers his strategy, some congressional critics are growing impatient and urging immediate action.

"Madam President, I rise today to call for the testimony before Congress of our top military commander in Afghanistan," said Sen. Kit Bond on the floor of the U.S. Senate on Thursday.

Bond, the vice chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, wants to hear directly from Gen. Stanley McChrystal about the need for an additional 25,000 to 35,000 more troops, in order to put pressure on the president.  Bond believes Obama has "buyer's remorse" on the war in Afghanistan.

"Negative and indecisive comments by the president, broadcast worldwide, have now given the enemy a big win in the public information battle," Bond said.

Congressman Ike Skelton of Missouri is the highest ranking Democrat to call for more troops.  He's the ranking member of the House Armed Services Committee.

North said the goal in Afghanistan shouldn't be a Jeffersonian democracy but rather a stable country that can protect itself.  It's a goal that has not been met in eight years, but North believes can be accomplished, based on his time with the troops.

"They know they can win this. That's important. They also know the only place this war will be lost isn't the battlefield of the Helmand province or in Kabul. It's going to get lost, if it's lost at all, in Washington," said North.
