JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. -- Former Republican Sen. Jim Talent of Missouri won't run for the Senate in 2010. Talent considered the race after Republican Sen. Kit Bond announced last month that he won't seek re-election.

In a statement issued Tuesday through the Missouri Republican Party, Talent said he's withdrawing his name from consideration. Talent cited a need to avoid party dissension and his work as vice chairman of a federal commission on preventing nuclear or biological attacks.

Republicans seriously considering the race include U.S. Rep. Roy Blunt and former State Treasurer Sarah Steelman. Secretary of State Robin Carnahan already has declared her candidacy for the Democratic Party nomination.

Talent served four years in the Senate before losing re-election in 2006 to Democrat Claire McCaskill.
