MONETT, Mo. -- This holiday weekend, American flags waved to celebrate our nation's independence. But one 9-year-old boy's patriotism is an inspiration all year long.
"I just keep looking everywhere I go,” said Wyatt Bowen.
Wyatt likes to scout the skies, looking for the Stars and Stripes.
"This is one of the flags I wrote the mayor about -- and he fixed it. It's right there,” said Wyatt.
You could call Wyatt a guardian of Old Glory. He looks for faded and frayed flags around Pierce City, Monett and all around the Ozarks.
"Dear _____, I was in Monett and saw your tattered flag in front of your armory,” says a typical letter that Wyatt writes. "I think the flag needs to be retired and a new one put up."
"It is disrespectful to fly a torn flag,” said Wyatt.
"I thought three or four letters and that'd be the end of it,” said Doug Bowen, Wyatt’s grandfather.
But Wyatt has written more than 20 letters so far. He’s also getting a lesson in politics and putting on the pressure.
There's one flag in particular that Wyatt is fighting to retire and he's already written the mayor twice about it: the one flying over the grounds at the Monett cemetery.
"I wrote Mayor Jim Orr another letter about the cemetery. I haven't gotten a response and I wrote about a week ago,” he said recently.
That won’t stop this soldier.
"I think it's very disrespectful because veterans are buried out here,” he said. "I'm going to keep writing and calling until he responds or changes the flag."
"I'm very proud of him,” said Bowen. “He's that kind of boy, and he's got enough gumption that he'll stand up to people."
Perhaps the Star Spangled Banner is just in the boy’s blood. After all, he was born on June 15, the day after Flag Day.
"I think that's pretty neat!” said Wyatt.
The American Legion surprised Wyatt with a $42 check so he could buy more stamps and envelopes for his letters.
