SPRINGFIELD -- If you've ever paid for a cab ride, you know every tenth of a mile counts. In the midst of sky high gas prices, Yellow Cab owner Kyle Butrick already had to raise cab fares, so he wants to make doubly sure he's doing right by his customers.
Butrick says he welcomes the Missouri Division of Weights and Measures. Twice a year, its inspectors check cab meters to make sure you go a mile when you pay for a mile.
One recent day, inspector Leroy Raymond checked 49 cabs. Two of them registered out of tolerance. One charged $.18 too much per mile; the other charged $.32 too little.
While good results, Butrick says he's only completely satisfied when all of his cars are within tolerance.
"We like to make sure meters are correct for customers," he said.
Of the two cars that tested out of tolerance, one was retested and tested okay. The second was about to be retested but was instead rear-ended by someone driving by. Everyone was okay, but the car was put out of service.
