WANTAGH, N.Y. (WPIX)—A 40-foot boat flipped over off the coast of Long Island, leaving seven people hospitalized, police say.
Sources tell PIX News the boat hit something in marsh land only accessible from the Wantagh State Parkway.
All seven boaters sustained serious injuries; at least one has been airlifted to Nassau County Medical Center. Authorities are still working to medically evaluate the condition of all the passengers.
Meanwhile, rescue boats from the Jones Beach Coast Guard Station were the first to arrive on the scene.
"A rescue boat crew from Coast Guard Station Jones Beach arrived on scene shortly after the initial report was made by SeaTow," said Petty Officer 1st Class Anthony Kozak, a Coast Guard Sector Long Island Sound watchstander. "The Jones Beach crew was able to assist in locating all of the boaters after an initial report that two people were missing."
The Nassau County Police Department, Wantagh Fire Department and New York City Police Department were all assisting in the rescue efforts.
The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
