According to Suffolk County police, Jennifer Gonzalez, 24, of Coram was arrested and charged with endangering the welfare of a child.
Police were called to Gonzalez's home on 1 Polk Court Thursday around 8:45 p.m. after receiving a call from a concerned neighbor who reportedly heard "incessant screaming of a child that lasted at least an hour." When police gained entry into the apartment, they found the brothers home alone.
When Gonzalez arrived back to the apartment around 9:45 p.m., she apparently told officers she was "mad at her boyfriend because he left to go play football." She said when her two sons fell asleep she decided to go for a walk and get her nails done because "she couldn't deal with supervising them."
But as police continued to question Gonzalez, they determined she had actually left the apartment around 7 p.m. and had been gone for about 2 hours and 45 minutes.
The two boys are currently in the custody of the boyfriend, who, as police determined, is also the father.
Gonzales, who is charged with endangering the welfare of a child, was arraigned Friday in First District Court in Central Islip.
