WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The U.S. Department of Labor awarded a $2.4 million grant to help laid-off industrial workers in parts of southern Missouri. The grant, which was announced Wednesday, will provide services such as counseling, job training and job search assistance.

The Missouri Division of Workforce Development will get an initial $1.9 million immediately and receive the rest if needed. The grant will help about 815 workers.

They were affected by mass layoffs and plant closures at 11 companies, including Cargill Value Added Meats, EDCO Group, McQueary Brothers, Noranda Aluminum, Paul Mueller, Petit Jean Poultry, Rapco/Major Custom Cable, Thorngate, Tracker Marine, Nordyne and Westgate Resorts.
