Verizon will close call center with 134 employees in Springfield

SPRINGFIELD -- As of Dec. 4, the Verizon Wireless call center at 3330 E. Montclair St. will close. Verizon's 134 employees got that news on Tuesday.

Verizon spokeswoman Brenda Hill says the company will move the call center's workload to other locations that have room for more employees. She says the employees here have been encouraged to apply for other positions with Verizon locally or company-wide, including a customer service center in Lincoln, Neb. Some jobs might be available at Verizon retail stores. Employees who get jobs in other locations will receive some relocation assistance from the company.

Verizon inherited the call center and the customer service representatives when it bought Alltel in January. Hill says Verizon doesn't have any plans for the building.
