Brown is charged with shooting Javon Carter, 20, in the face and arm soutside a home on South Maryland Avenue, in the Phelps Grove neighborhood near Missouri State University, on May 5.

Populations of both districts in northern Christian County are growing faster than building add-ons can keep up.

NIXA, Mo. -- Booming growth in Christian County means second high schools are part of the long term plans for the Ozark and Nixa school districts. Construction projects are common sights in these two districts because their populations are growing so fast that they exceed projections. The Nixa district likely will have 6,000 students next year, a number that, four years ago, administrators didn’t plan to hit for a few more years.

Stone County deputies seek damages for charges of brutality during arrests

GALENA, Mo. -- Two Stone County sheriff’s deputies sued four people, including a Crane alderperson and a lawyer, Tuesday afternoon. In the lawsuit, which is filed in Greene County Circuit Court in Springfield, the deputies say the defendants defamed them with accusations of excessive force and police brutality.

Man who lied about being Joplin tornado victim heads to prison

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- A man from Springfield who falsely claimed to be a Joplin tornado victim was sentenced in federal court on Wednesday for a fraud scheme in which he bounced more than $160,000 in bad checks at dozens of businesses in southwest Missouri.

Also Wednesday, a man went to federal prison for bouncing checks and claiming to be a Joplin tornado victim.

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- A federal grand jury indicted seven people from Joplin and a man from Lebanon, in separate and unrelated cases, for fraudulently receiving federal disaster benefits following the tornado on May 22, 2011.

Watercolor U.S.A. 2012 opens June 9 at Springfield Art Museum

Owners of Seville Hotel in Harrison file for bankruptcy

HARRISON, Ark. -- The owners of the Seville Hotel say it will remain open the rest of the year even though they filed for Bankruptcy Court protection. The Seville has undergone a $3.5 million makeover but stays more empty than occupied.
