More than 8,000 snowmobile racing fans recently came to the Days of ’76 Rodeo Arena in Deadwood.

These are hallowed grounds where some of the world’s best cowboys, including South Dakota legend Casey Tibbs, performed. But last weekend, fans came for the Deadwood Snocross Shoot Out.

They watched Ross Martin of Burlington, Wis., win the 24-lap Open Pro final Saturday in front of a full-house 4,500 fans, according to the Rapid City Journal. Martin appeared to get the worst of an earlier qualifying heat race crash, but recovered to win. Amsoil Championship Snocross series points-leader Tucker Hibbert of Pelican Rapids Minn., won Friday’s main event.

Martin and Hibbert and several other competitors came directly from the Winter X Games 17 in Aspen, Colo. Martin was the silver medalist in snocross at the 2013 X games. This marked the return of snocross racing in the Black Hills after an eight-year absence.
