SPRINGFIELD -- David Fillmore, the only sports information director that Evangel University has ever had, died on Sunday morning. The university says doctors diagnosed him last month with mesothelioma, a rare form of lung cancer. He also had complications due to pneumonia.
Fillmore was a native of Leadville, Colo. He graduated from Evangel in 1976, worked briefly as a journalist in Colorado, and then became Evangel's SID in October 1977.
Besides working at Evangel for 32 years, Fillmore was the NAIA District 16 SID from '85-'93, and was the Heart of American Conference SID from '88-'03.
In 1999, Fillmore received the NAIA Sports Information Directors Association Clarence "Ike" Pearson Award to honor outstanding contributions to the profession of sports information professionals within the NIA. In 2007, Evangel inducted him into its Athletics Hall of Fame.
Fillmore's wife, Patricia, and their married daughter, Deanna Brady, survive him. Brady is expecting her first child in April.
Evangel said Monday morning that services for Fillmore are still being scheduled.

Here's what Fillmore wrote in his biography on Evangel's Web site:<.p>
Favorite Memory as a Student: Let me see . . . is it shooting bottle rockets at the girls down the long hallway that led to the old post office in the barracks, or is it selecting an unfortunate soul and dunking him in the fountain that used to be in front of the library, or is it taking my turn in front of the Dean and slowly turning around to see if my hair was too long, or is it the stack of parking and speeding tickets Gene (Thomlinson) was happy to keep writing for me and that I finally paid in the summer so I could add an actual diploma to the folder we were presented with as we walked the line, or is it cleaning a laundry on Sunshine street to provide that extra money every student needs?
No, these are all fond memories, but my favorite memories are going to chapel for the great services, where the Spirit of God always met with us, having Dr. Zenas Bicket as my advisor - he was also one of my professors and a friend, and studying in the library, where I bothered a girl named Pat Culbertson so much that she finally granted me a date and we were married the next fall! And that led to another great memory. My daughter, Deanna Brady, graduated from Evangel in 2003!
Personal Information: I enjoy watching students grow spiritually and mentally at Evangel and then seeing what they do with their lives after they leave for the real world. In my spare time I enjoy reading, gardening, playing the trumpet, traveling, Soduko puzzles, and keeping up with the NHRA. I still have an interest in mountain climbing, backpacking, snow skiing, and wildlife photgraphy.
Other: Graduated from Lake County High School in 1966. Attended Colorado State for two years as a forestry major and was then drafted by the U.S. Army. I spent 13 months in Vietnam as a machine gunner with the infantry as a member of the 101st Airborne Division. Upon the completion of my military duty, I made one of the best decisions of my life - I enrolled at Evangel.
