ST. LOUIS -- The St. Louis Cardinals said Monday that Tony La Russa will return for a 15th season as manager, and Mark McGwire will be his hitting coach. The announcement came at a news conference is on Monday morning at Busch Stadium.
McGwire, who has a one-year contract, will replace Hal McRae. He hit 70 home runs in 1998, a record since topped by Barry Bonds. McGwire has largely been out of the public eye since retiring in 2001. He attended a Congressional hearing but famously refused to answer questions about steroids use, saying he wasn't there to talk about the past. Probably because of his lack of candor, he's fallen far short in balloting for the Hall of Fame despite 583 home runs. Most PopularMore Good Stuff |
