Jamie McMurray snapped an 86-race winless streak with a victory at Talladega Superspeedway on Sunday. Three-time defending series champion Jimmie Johnson is credited with an eighth-place finish, likely enough to wrap up a NASCAR record fourth consecutive title.
The race ended under caution because of a last-lap accident that sent Mark Martin's car flipping across the track. It was the second harrowing accident in the final five laps. Ryan Newman's car sailed onto its roof and landed upside down in the grass, causing a red-flag delay of almost 13 minutes for Newman to be cut from the car. That set up a two-lap shootout to the finish of what had otherwise been a quiet day of racing at Talladega. McMurray, who visited the Springfield Raceway just weeks ago, is looking for a new ride next year after Jack Roush Racing chose not to retain him in 2010. McMurray was the odd man out as NASCAR rules state that teams can have no more than four cars on the Sprint Cup circuit starting next year, and Roush currently has five.
