ST. LOUIS -- The St. Louis Cardinals offered salary arbitration to Matt Holliday, Joel Pineiro and Mark DeRosa, ensuring draft pick compensation if the players sign with other teams. The National League Central champions didn't offer arbitration Tuesday night to Troy Glaus, who was sidelined most of the season with a shoulder injury.
The three free agents offered arbitration have until Dec. 7 to accept or reject it. A player who rejects arbitration is free to negotiate with any team but St. Louis would receive compensation.
The Cardinals gave up a package of prospects to get Holliday from the Athletics in July. He had 55 runs-batted-in in 63 games while batting .353. Pineiro was 15-12 with a 3.49 earned run average. DeRosa was acquired from Cleveland in June and batted .228 with 10 homers and 28 RBI in 68 games. He was hindered by a wrist injury.
