Big win in Denver caps bad year for Chiefs

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The Kansas City Chiefs doubled their victory total from 2008. Now people wonder whether they are twice as good now as they were last year. It's not likely but exactly how much progress the Chiefs made in Todd Haley's first year is impossible to assess, even for players.

Sunday's 44-24 rout of the Denver team that embarrassed the Chiefs 44-13 just a month earlier sent everyone into the offseason in a much better mood. Now Haley won't have to avoid anyone's eyes when he keeps talking about his team getting better.

Whether the 4-12 Chiefs made good use of the 2009 season or merely marked time until they can get a transfusion of better talent is hard to gauge. It may not be known until some time around the first of next November.
