SOUTH BEND — Terran Scott was one smooth operator Tuesday night.
The Washington guard dialed it in from long distance with five 3-pointers in netting 18 points as the Panthers prevailed, 62-50, in a Northern Indiana Conference contest at Adams.
Shareita Patton also tallied 18 points and Ayana Thomas added 12 for Washington (8-10, 5-2).
Freshman Taloni Reese scored 18 points and freshman Leah Blickensderfer 10 for the Eagles (6-15, 4-4).
“We did some good things,” said Washington coach Maurice Scott after seeing his team snap a three-game losing skid. “We just need to do them for four quarters. We need to keep working as the sectional is our goal.”
Washington raced to a 19-8 lead early on runs of 9-0 and 10-0 in the opening period as Patton scored seven. The Panthers led, 33-20, at halftime as Adams was just 6-of-19 from the field after missing a slew of shots from point-blank range.
Scott, a 5-foot-6 senior, tickled the twine from long range every time the Eagles got within striking distance. The hosts rallied to within 37-25 in the third period before Scott hit three straight triples to make it 46-25.
The Eagles battled back in the final period. Reese and Blickensderfer rallied their team to within 53-44 with 2:30 to play. Scott, who averages 13.8 points, again answered the call with a baseline trey to push the Panther lead back into double digits.
“Terran has been working on her shot a lot,” said coach Scott. “We need her shooting, and she’s been receiving that.”
Adams, which starts three freshmen, outscored Washington, 22-14, in the final period. The hosts were 17-of-54 from the field, which included 8-of-16 in the fourth quarter.
Adams, which went 1-41 the previous two years, has improved dramatically under new coach Steve Scott.
“I was most happy with how the girls kept fighting back,” said the first-year coach. “They have hustled and given me effort all year. We just missed a zillion bunnies. We make half of those and it’s a different game.
“I like that we are competitive. We just have trouble scoring, and they burned us early tonight rebounding and in transition. Those were our two areas of emphasis too. We knew Terran could shoot. But I didn’t expect them to make eight 3s.”
Washington plays at St. Joseph’s on Thursday. Adams plays at Concord Feb. 1.
