DAY ONE - Aug. 13
Several cowboys gave the Korkow Rodeos a tip of the hat on Aug. 13.
The Dacotah Stampede Rodeo was held at the Brown County Fairgrounds on on Aug. 13. The rough stock was provided by Korkow Rodeos, which has been producing rodeos since 1947. The Korkow “A-Team” stock has been selected by the top cowboys to buck at every National Finals Rodeo since the rodeo's inception in 1959 - a claim only two other stock contractors can make.
“The horses were alright tonight,” bareback rider Tanner Aus said. “I know Korkows have got some great horses in there. Overall they have a good pin of horses.”
Aus, who is from Granite Falls, Minn., had the high point ride of the night in the bareback riding. He rode his horse Silver Nickle for the full eight seconds to earn an 80-point ride. It was his first time on the bareback horse.
“That horse was pretty rapid,” said Aus, who won the bareback riding at the College National Finals Rodeo in Casper, Wyo., earlier this year. “He bucked pretty fast. He didn't get off the ground much, but just a nice horse for guys to get on. He turned out of there smooth. I got a good start and that built my ride for a couple of jumps.”
Ty Thompson of Wanblee also bragged up his horse Slingshot after his high point ride in the saddle bronc riding.
“I have never seen that horse,” Thompson said. “It is a young horse that Korkows have got up and coming. It should be good in a year or two. They have really good horses. It is a good rodeo company.”
The former Dickinson State rider scored an 80 on the horse and was one of nine qualified rides on the night.
“I got a good mark out of him and got a good start,” Thompson said. “She did her part and I stayed on. Both ends worked out pretty good.”
It worked out pretty good for Andrew Coughlin of Timber Lake as well. He scored an 82 on the bull Spite Ya to earn the high-point ride of the night in the bull riding.
“He kind of came out and went right and I have been riding really good away from my hand,” Coughlin said. “It was just a really good bull to score on.”
Coughlin had never seen the bull before, but again trusted the Korkow Rodeos advice about the bull.
“I know the contractors pretty well and they are pretty honest in what the bull does and he did exactly what he was going to do,” Coughlin said.
Clint Kindred of Oral had the best time on the first night in the tie-down, roping with a time of :9.1 seconds. J.B. Lord of Sturgis had a time of :3.8 seconds to earn the best time in the steer wrestling. Cody Graham of Everton, Mo., and Jason Thompson of Ozark, Mo., clocked in with a time of :4.7 seconds in the team roping to earn the best time of the first night. Sue Berg of Bloomington, Minn., had the best barrel racing time with a time of :14.81 seconds.
