The 202nd Army Band has been called upon many times to perform outside the state for special training assignments. Unit musicians have given concerts in Hawaii, Michigan, Mississippi, Louisiana, Georgia, West Virginia and Virginia.
In November 1994, as guests of the Chilean government, the band spent two weeks in Santiago, Chile, playing concerts for the public and performing for the United States Ambassador to Chile.
The 202nd Army Band is constantly seeking talented young musicians who want to serve their state and their nation.
Members of the 202nd Army Band come from all walks of life and include teachers, computer specialists, college professors, professional musicians and full-time college students. Performers have released solo albums and play with well known groups such as the Louisville-based “Crossgate Woodwind Ensemble.”
The 202nd is a part of the Kentucky Army National Guard’s 751st Troop Command, based at Fort Knox.
The 202nd Army Band was formed during World War II in Lexington with a total strength of seven people. Today, with more than 40 people, the band is one of the most exciting opportunities in the guard.
The band has been stationed in high school gymnasiums and aircraft hangars. Today, it enjoys the use of a modern rehearsal facility in Frankfort.
The John Philip Sousa Foundation awarded the 202nd Army Band the 2010 “Col. George S. Howard Citation of Musical Excellence for Military Concert Bands.” The international award represents the highest honor a military concert band can receive.
