1. The funky beat of musical New Orleans

NEW ORLEANS — The cab careened past Washington Square and onto Frenchmen Street. It was close to 10 p.m., and the neighborhood was filled with locals adorned with tattoos, piercings and lots of ragged black accessories.

  3. Vote Here To Induct 'The Meters' Into Rock n Roll's Hall of Fame

The Meters are local "funk" legends influencing musicians all over the world. Now they could be joining the ranks of The Beatles, The Who and The Rolling Stones. But it's not a done deal for The Meters. To be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame they need as many votes as possible.

  5. Big Daddy on Kickstarter for retro Broadway-Hollywood comeback

One of the great left-field surprises of the 1980s pop music scene came with the arrival of Big Daddy, a whimsical band that reimagined hits of the day as they might have sounded had they been recorded in the 1950s.

  11. Alabama Shakes steamroll into Virgin Mobile FreeFest

When Alabama Shakes take the Virgin Mobile FreeFest stage on Saturday, the quartet — all from Athens, Alabama — will likely play its biggest hit, "Hold On," within the first few songs.

  13. Kill your idols

Jesse Jarnow has a favorite rock band. Its name is Yo La Tengo. Jarnow has seen the Hoboken, N.J., trio perform 70 or 80 times and, as if it needs to be said, owns all its records — more than 20 — often in both digital and vinyl form. It's a deep admiration traced to Jarnow's early days as a New York City music writer, when he was assigned a feature on the band for the magazine Signal to Noise. While studying Yo La Tengo's brand of layered rock, which veers from lilting beauty to chaotic squall, often in the same album, he found a deep, personal appreciation.

  19. Dan Deacon's Ottobar show a love letter to Baltimore's music scene

If electronic musician Dan Deacon is anything, he is fiercely loyal to his adopted hometown of Baltimore. Last night's sold-out show at the Ottobar wasn't so much a coronation; that ship has long since sailed. Rather, its familiar dance party feel,...

  21. Weezer sticks to hits at first Charm City Music Festival

As a massive, glowing "W" flashed behind the band, the alternative-rock veterans Weezer wasted little time reminding the Charm City Music Festival crowd just how long they've been together. The group kicked off its consistently up-tempo, 90-minute headlining set at the first-ever event with "My Name Is Jonas," the opening track from the band's 1994 debut album.

  23. Don't be tardy for the party season

Baltimore's party season is off and running after getting its kickoff last night with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra gala, which many folks consider the unofficial start to the fall party season. The next three months may be the most intense time of year when it comes to the dozens of shindigs dedicated to raising money for a number of non-profit organizations. The parties themselves are as varied as the charities they support, and the crowds they draw.
