  1. Performance/interview: Dessa

How odd it is to hear an artist you respect and appreciate suggest she doesn’t have the pipes to tackle her words.

How odd it is to hear an artist you respect and appreciate suggest she doesn’t have the pipes to tackle her words. “If I had the money, I don’t even know if I would be singing my own songs,” says rapper/singer/poet Dessa, a solo...

  3. 2/1/2013-Groundhog Day Tomorrow

I am so completely pessimistic and cynical about this country being able to pass any meaningful gun control laws as long as the right to bear arms is sanctified, enshrined and beatified by the United States Constitution. To end the gun culture we have to do something extraordinary, just as Abraham Lincoln did to end the slave culture in the South. I'm not talking about confiscating people's guns. I'm talking about making gun ownership very tightly controlled, restricted and uncommon. You want punishment for a crime committed with a gun; how about life in prison?

  5. AccuWeather.com predicts 6 more weeks of winter, snow after Groundhog Day

AccuWeather.com released its spring weather outlook this morning, and it includes seasonable weather that one doesn't need a meteorology degree to predict: winter storm chances for the East Coast in February and March and milder temperatures not until April and May.

  7. Williamsport bringing back the 'River Rat' to take rightful place on Groundhog Day

Forget about Punxsutawney Phil, the Town of Williamsport is holding its first River Rat Day on Saturday, Groundhog Day, to see if the “River Rat” — an actual rat — sees its shadow and predicts six more weeks of winter.

There are certain newspaper traditions I love and one of them is drawing editorial cartoons during the Christmas season. There's an abundance of metaphors to use even when the news is bad, and that's almost all the time in Editorial Cartoonland.  ...

  15. Interview: Kill Hannah's Christmas presence

Kill Hannah has spent much of its career coming to its fans around the country and in Europe, but once a year during the holiday season the Chicago alt-rock band has its fans come to it for “A New Heart For Christmas.” And considering the event — a fan expo of sorts — is in its ninth year (it kicked off Thursday with a rehearsal performance and fan Q&A and is followed by an acoustic show Friday at Crimson Lounge and a concert Saturday at the neighboring House of Blues) the trip must be worth it for the band’s faithful followers.

  17. Snow, high winds, messy commute -- but maybe a white Christmas too

A winter storm whipped by high winds is expected to hit the Chicago area just in time for the evening rush hour Thursday, dumping up to 4 inches here but maybe a foot or more in Wisconsin where a blizzard warning has been issued.

  19. Coach clearly not in sync with players and management

Take the observational layup and agree with the Chicago consensus that coach Tom Thibodeau stubbornly sticking with his starters Monday night in a game in which the Bulls blew a 27-point lead reinforces how little he values his reserves.
