  1. Sundance darlings eye alternative distribution platforms

Not that long ago, premiering a star-driven Sundance Film Festival movie on a video-on-demand channel was an admission of failure. But last year's festival produced two huge on-demand hits, Richard Gere's crime drama "Arbitrage" and Kirsten Dunst's...

  7. Column: The operatic governor

Coyness is not part of Chris Christie’s repertoire, which also does not stress subtlety, delicacy and intimation. New Jersey’s governor is more Mickey Spillane than Jane Austen and his persona, which sometimes is that of a bulldog who got up...

  13. The incredible shrinking Barnes & Noble

Big box bookstores such as Barnes &amp; Noble were once considered a major threat to the health of the book-selling industry, offering discounts, massive selections and lattes that independent bookstores could not. Now things have changed: Barnes &amp; Noble is the last national bookstore chain standing, and it's getting smaller ... and smaller ... and smaller.

  17. 'Pride and Prejudice' still relevant 200 years later

"It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife."

  23. Visions of Mann's 'Venice' in Russo's 'Nate in Venice'

The title isn't the only similarity between <strong>Richard Russo's</strong> new e-short, <strong>"Nate in Venice,"</strong> and Thomas Mann's novella, "Death in Venice." In both pieces, the main character obsesses over an unattainable adolescent. Gustav, protagonist of Mann's novel, becomes enamored with a young boy on a Venice beach. In Russo's e-short, Nate, a semi-retired English professor, becomes infatuated with "the Mauntz girl," a student in his seminar who has Asperger syndrome and distances herself from others in the group. What happens between Nate and the Mauntz girl, readers will have to wait until the end of the novella to discover. (It's worth the wait.)
