Fiction or nonfiction?

With his first collection of short stories, “Drown,” and his Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, “The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao,” Junot Díaz won enthusiastic fans. 23. Book of the Month: This is how you write it

Short stories may be literary stepchildren, but Junot Díaz has done his part to elevate the form to royal family status. His debut collection "Drown" drew critical raves when it appeared 15 years ago. His stories were fresh and original and felt urgent. They commanded readers' attention. He had come to the U.S. — New Jersey, specifically — from the Dominican Republic as a child and created characters who spoke a form of nerdy Spanglish that represented real life.
