1. Save the dates for Baltimore and Washington book festivals

September's a big month for bibliophiles, as Baltimore and Washington stage their book festivals. And this year, for the first time in recent years, the festivals don't fall on the same weekend, allowing readers to catch both packed slates of authors and events.

We began in January 1997. Our group started after the Mount Prospect Public Library recruited two men to organize a book club that would be directed toward men. But the books selected appealed just as much to women, so our group became coed.

  13. Chicago-area book club

One thing to know about our club: The Harbor Country book club has been meeting monthly at the Harbor Grand Hotel in New Buffalo, Mich., since 1999. Our group is made up mostly of "transplants," people who have moved here from all over the country, including many from the Chicago area. Our group has between 10 and 20 members, with an influx of members in the summer. Many lasting friendships have been formed through the book club, and members of the club have also created a separate gourmet dinner group and biking group.
