9. Real Art Ways Displays the Work of New Haven Artist Ronnie Rysz

New Haven artist Ronnie Rysz, whose works hang at Real Art Ways through mid-September as part of an exhibition called Closed Circle, has an interesting day job: he creates custom prosthetics for soldiers and civilians who are missing limbs. That might not have a great deal to do with his artwork, such as the mixed-media collage Culture Warrior (pictured), which is part of a larger focus on contemporary portraiture. But it may tell you about the ways Rysz has had to study the human body, the way it moves and functions, in order to do his job. And that's clearly needed for his art as well; although the subjects are stationary, the portraits in Closed Circle are full of life and motion. Head to the opening reception at the always-fun Creative Cocktail Hour on Aug. 16.

  21. RAW: Hartford kicks off June 7 at the Russian Lady in Hartford

Mixed-media and installation artists, bands, fashion designers (sometimes provocative ones; see above), delicious drinks: all part of RAW: Hartford, a new monthly event (not to be confused with Hartford's Real Art Ways) that kicks off at the Russian Lady. It's a chance for local creative types to make a name for themselves, to hobnob and collaborate with fellow artists and even to sell their works at zero commission. Hartford is the latest city, along with Atlanta, Reno, Honolulu and Raleigh, to get its own RAW event — they're produced by a national, altruistic for-profit whose goal is to get things brewing in local arts hotspots — and it's the nearest one you'll find between Boston and New York. (RAW: Hartford will return in July at another location, so be on the lookout.)
