7. RAW: Hartford kicks off June 7 at the Russian Lady in Hartford

Mixed-media and installation artists, bands, fashion designers (sometimes provocative ones; see above), delicious drinks: all part of RAW: Hartford, a new monthly event (not to be confused with Hartford's Real Art Ways) that kicks off at the Russian Lady. It's a chance for local creative types to make a name for themselves, to hobnob and collaborate with fellow artists and even to sell their works at zero commission. Hartford is the latest city, along with Atlanta, Reno, Honolulu and Raleigh, to get its own RAW event — they're produced by a national, altruistic for-profit whose goal is to get things brewing in local arts hotspots — and it's the nearest one you'll find between Boston and New York. (RAW: Hartford will return in July at another location, so be on the lookout.)

  15. The All-American Game: Poker celebrates our love of risk and money

Douglas Tirola's All In: The Poker Movie, makes the case that nothing is more American than poker. The game involves risk, skill, chance, luck, a competitive edge, a desire to win, the ability to bluff, and, yes, money. Also, as numerous clips attest, poker shows up in many Hollywood movies and maintains a certain mystique for its backroom ambience and the kinds of guts and individuality we tend to celebrate in our heroes. For someone like Chris Moneymaker, who emerges as the hero of Tirola's film, poker was the means to move from being a casual online player to a celebrity in the poker world. When Moneymaker, whom we first meet telling us of his disastrous betting on football in college, won $2.5 million at The World Series of Poker broadcast on ESPN in 2003, his success effectively tripled the number of players vying for a spot in the tournament.

There's only one Real Art Ways, and although there are lots of odd people around, there's only one Odd Ball, the annual celebration of creativity and weirdness. The spacious gallery morphs into a quasi-psychedelic realm of music, art, dancing and delicious treats. Costumes are definitely recommended.
