An 18-year-old Dunbar High School basketball player was hurt Monday evening in a burst of gunfire while he and teammates were boarding a school bus, police said.
About 7:50 p.m. three or four people started shooting in the direction of the bus, which was near the intersection of West 62nd Street and South Stewart Avenue, Chicago Police Department News Affairs Officer Ron Gaines said.
The 18-year-old was struck in the leg. He was taken by the bus driver to Provident Hospital, where he was listed in good condition, Gaines said.
The man was with teammates from the Dunbar High School basketball team, boarding the bus, when several people started harassing them and flashing gang signs, according to police.
The bus driver told the students to board the bus quickly, and the team members did not respond to what those outside the bus were doing, but they started firing anyway, according to police.
No suspects were in custody as Area South detectives investigated.
