    GALENA, Mo. -- Two Stone County sheriff’s deputies sued four people, including a Crane alderperson and a lawyer, Tuesday afternoon.  In the lawsuit, which is filed in Greene County Circuit Court in Springfield, the deputies say the defendants defamed them with accusations of excessive force and police brutality.

  5. Springfield City Council approves exemptions to smoking ban

    SPRINGFIELD, Mo. --  Springfield City Council Monday agreed to some exemptions to the city's year-old ban on smoking in most public indoor spaces.  Those exemptions are for bingo halls, cigar bars, tobacco shops and private clubs where no employees are working.  Electronic cigarettes used in theatrical productions also will be allowed, and theatrical productions themselves would be exempt from the ban.

    SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- The City of Springfield paid out more than $640,000 in lawsuit payments and in claims last year. Some of those claims were for as little as $125 for lost property, but one lawsuit over a poor intersection design cost the city $420,000.  A lawsuit like that is just one factor that can impact a program like the city’s sidewalk repair effort.

  19. Christopher Collings murder trial: Jury recommends death penalty

    ROLLA, Mo. -- Twelve jurors recommended Friday evening that Christopher Collings get a death penalty for raping and killing his friend's 9-year-old daughter more than four years ago at Collings' home near Wheaton.  The jurors unanimously found, after 45 minutes of deliberations, that the murder involved two of the 17 possible aggravating circumstances that are necessary under Missouri law to impose a death penalty.
