Helfgot's hoops blog | Davis cleared to play for Morgan Park; Williams still awaiting word

On the eve of Morgan Park's season opener, Kyle Davis, a transfer from Hyde Park, was cleared to play by CPS administration Wednesday, according to Morgan Park coach Nick Irvin.

Davis, a 5-foot-11 guard who signed with Dayton, is considered among the top 10 seniors in Illinois. He transferred to Morgan Park last spring.

Davis' presence alongside DePaul recruit Billy Garrett and sophomore sharpshooter Kain Harris gives Morgan Park arguably the best backcourt in Illinois.

The Mustangs are still waiting for word on the eligibility of another guard, Markee Williams.

Williams was Morgan Park's second-best player as a freshman in 2009-10, helping Wayne Blackshear lead the Mustangs to the city championship. He transferred to Crane last year, then went back to Morgan Park.

Another Morgan Park guard, Charlie Moore, is among the best freshmen in Illinois.

Morgan Park also has size and athleticism in the frontcourt with 6-8 senior Xzavier Taylor and 6-6 junior Josh Cunningham.

The Mustangs pose a threat to Simeon in the Red South. Irvin said their Jan. 16 meeting most likely will be played at Chicago State.

Morgan Park opens the season Thursday against Southland Prep before taking on a strong Notre Dame team Sunday.
