Somerset sweeps Meyersdale

SOMERSET — The Somerset Post 181 American Legion baseball team swept Meyersdale, 14-4 and 21-2, on Sunday in a Cambria County League doubleheader.

It was the culmination of six games in four days for the Businessmen, who returned from a trip to West Virginia for the Hillbilly Hardball Classic. Somerset is scheduled to host Portage today at 6 p.m.

Michael Flyte launched a two-run home run and Drew Hemminger went 2-for-2 with two RBIs and two runs scored in the first game against Meyersdale.

Zach Helsley, who had two RBIs, and Devin Pritts each added a pair of hits. Ian Stiffler scored three times. Brent Barron picked up the mound win.

Meyersdale’s Ty Mayhugh hit 2-for-2 while Justin Donaldson scored twice and added a base hit.

In Game 2, Randy Brewer tossed a two-hitter with four strikeouts over five innings to record the win.

The Businessmen (11-2 in CCAL, 12-5 overall) also took advantage of 17 walks. Pritts scored five runs and Raven Beeman crossed home plate four times. Cameron Darr delivered three RBIs and three runs scored.

Kirk Davis and Tyrel Stockwell had Meyersdale’s only hits. The Raiders dropped to 5-8 with the two losses.

The Somerset ball club went 1-3 at the Hillbilly Hardball Classic.

It opened with a 10-0 loss to Cumberland and a 21-11 setback to Fairmont on Thursday.

Pat Blough and Hemminger each pounded out two hits in Game 1. In the second game, Pritts and Alex Dirienzo were perfect at the plate in Game 2, each going 3-for-3. Barron had two hits, including a home run. Helsley hit safely twice.

Somerset’s only win of the tournament came on Friday, 13-6, over Buckhannon.

Winning pitcher Stiffler struck out eight over four innings. Hemminger posted four strikeouts in relief.

Offensively, Pritts and Hemminger had three hits apiece. Flyte went 2-for-3 with three runs batted in. Barron also added two hits.

Somerset’s final game was a 16-2 loss to Beckley County on Saturday. Blough had the Businessmen’s lone RBI with a single.



Ebensburg sweeps Stoystown

CAIRNBROOK — Ebensburg took two from Stoystown in a Cambria County American Legion baseball twin bill on Sunday.

Mitch Brown batted 3-for-4 and Zak Ambrisco earned the mound win for Ebensburg in a 5-2 victory.
