HOLLIDAYSBURG — Somerset suffered a heartbreaking 63-62 double overtime loss to Lewistown in a District 6-AAA boys basketball playoff game Wednesday.

“It was a very good game,” Somerset coach Scott Close said. “Unfortunately, we had many chances to close it out and we didn’t.”

Dan Wheeler, who scored a game-high 27 points, provided the scoring punch and last-second heroics for third-seeded Lewistown. Wheeler sank a desperation three-pointer with two seconds remaining in the first overtime period. He also converted a last-second free throw to ice the victory in the second overtime.

“The effort by both teams was simply amazing,” Close said. “I have to commend both squads with playing extremely hard.”

No one played any harder than Somerset’s Brent Barron who scored a team-high 26 points. Teammate Devin Pritts also played a rock-solid game with 15 points. Overall, it was a solid team effort on both ends of the court and from the bench for the upset-minded Eagles who close out the season with a 7-16 record.

“This was the last game for the seniors and I am very proud to have been associated with them,” Close said. “I wish them all the luck in the world as they move on.”

Seniors include Pritts, Zach Helsley, Nick Roth, Taylor Proctor, David Miller, Noah Hemminger, Hank Steinmiller and Bryce Custer.

Lewistown (17-6) will play Johnstown in a 6-AAA semifinal Saturday.
