  1. In Canton, parking woes part of growing pains

There's a Starbucks and an Outback Steakhouse and a growing young tech company. Soon, a Harris Teeter grocery store and a Target will be built. All are helping to draw new residents to Canton.

  5. Beat Winter Blues with Local Authors

As I write this, we’ve just been through a week of lousy, rainy weather, the kind that makes me want to snuggle in the corner of my couch with a cup of tea at my side and a book in my hands. With the right book, I could be instantly transported from the chilled, gray dreariness of mid-January Virginia to the turquoise waters and pretty pastels of Bermuda, or to the raw and wild beauty of the Australian Outback.

  9. Columbia man allegedly tied to Howard County gang indicted

The crimes appear ordinary on Howard County's November police log — two break-ins on U.S. 1, another at a Columbia home where a television and video games were taken, and a man held up at gunpoint in the village of Kings Contrivance. But the...

  11. Transformation seen in Brewers Hill

There's a transformation taking place this fall that is obvious from the former National Brewery in Brewers Hill. On a terrace just below the iconic Mr. Boh sign, I observed a construction army at work along Conkling and Dean streets. Over the summer, they labored on the creation of more than 600 new apartment rental units in low-rise buildings. Week by week, floors rose. Balconies appeared. Parking decks arrived. And sweeps disappeared down an ancient brick powerhouse chimney.
