  1. The risks and rewards of 'auteur' filmmaking

Nicholas Jarecki was in trouble: He couldn't come up with the perfect line for Susan Sarandon to say to Richard Gere for a particular scene in "Arbitrage." He needed a catchphrase a business tycoon would have invented. But as a film writer and director...

  11. Will Wall Street prevail?

Corporate-sponsored groups have launched a campaign of litigation in the lower federal courts challenging the legality of the second major piece of President Barack Obama's legislative program, one that received a lot of attention in last week's first presidential debate: the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act of 2010. When these cases reach the Supreme Court, we could very well see a reprise of the drama surrounding its decision on the Affordable Care Act at the end of this past term.

  13. 'Arbitrage': Sympathy for the devil ★★★

It's an unseemly request by a movie, to ask us to root for the lying, scrambling but extremely well-coiffed hedge fund billionaire weasel played by Richard Gere in the new film "Arbitrage." But there it is. The movie does ask, and to varying degrees, we comply.

  15. Film review: Richard Gere plays one of the 1% in 'Arbitrage'

“Arbitrage” is not about Jack Abramoff, or Bernie Madoff or even Mitt Romney. But resemblances between any one of them and the film's protagonist, Robert Miller (Richard Gere), are hardly coincidental. Miller is a stand-in for a whole class of people — the 1% of the 1% of the 1% — to wit, Wall Street. He is what Tom Wolfe labeled a “Master of the Universe” in his novel “The Bonfire of the Vanities” — with which “Arbitrage” shares a number of plot elements.

  21. Reel Critics: 'Resident Evil' keeps features that made it popular

"Resident Evil: Retribution" is the fifth movie in a very successful franchise that began as a series of apocalyptic Japanese video games. The surreal sci-fi adventure blends "Aliens" and "The Matrix" with "Blade Runner" overtones. For good measure, thousands of flesh eating zombies are added to the mix to chase down the remaining humans on Earth in a climatic battle of survival.

  23. Arbitrage

I’m glad I have smart friends. The one I brought to this screening told me what “arbitrage” meant. It had something to do with buying and selling the same thing in the stock market. She was a little more detailed, but I’m lazy and even as I write this, figure if anybody really cared they could look it up. At least it’s not some title like “The Last Merger.”
