5. 'The Visitor' has its papers in order

AS long as movies have existed, they have shown immigrants flocking to America for a better life. But in post-9/11 America, where security concerns have made illegal immigration one of the most divisive issues of our day, the era of uplift is over. In today's films, an immigrant coming to America without the proper papers is likely to be tossed into a detention center and kicked out of the country.

  7. Richard Jenkins, 'The Visitor'

A longtime character actor with one of those "Don't I know you?" faces, Richard Jenkins has been building award buzz for his role in "The Visitor" since it first appeared on the festival circuit more than a year ago. If not exactly his "big break," for Jenkins, 61, the part is his first leading role.

  9. Intersecting (and dissecting) cultures on film

AN Israeli man and a Palestinian woman fall in love in Berlin against the backdrop of the 2006 World Cup. A white trailer park mom from upstate New York teams with a Mohawk nation woman to smuggle illegal Chinese and Pakistani immigrants into the U.S. A half-Italian, half-English art star living in the states tries to adopt a pair of orphaned Sudanese twins. A college professor arrives at his seldom-used New York apartment to discover a young foreign couple-- he's Syrian, she's Senegalese-- living there illegally. A young Laotian man tells the story of his family's seemingly inevitable but ultimately disastrous immigration to America.

  13. Music for 'The Visitor'

"The Visitor" took me by surprise in how quickly and unexpectedly it took shape musically in my mind. In part, I think it was because at the core it is a musical film with a drum as its heartbeat. The drum sets the pace. It creates the basis that brings Walter Vale (played by Richard Jenkins) out of his empty life. His first tentative taps on the djembe were to me like his sputtering heart waking up again. So with the beat already strong, I simply followed it to its musical conclusion. I sought to evoke Walter's transformation from a man skirting the edges of everyday life to a man part of a community fighting for its survival.
