  3. 'Happy People' a portrait of wilderness culture frozen in time ★★★

Serendipity is what gives us "Happy People: A Year in the Taiga," an intimate portrait of the vanishing breed of hunters and fishers still making a life in the isolated heart of Siberia, where a mild winter day is minus 30 and the only way in or out is by helicopter or boat.

  7. Film review: Violent 'Jack Reacher' subject matter too soon for the theaters

Under normal circumstances, it would obviously be unprofessional for a reviewer to say that they are "not in the mood" for a particular film. After all, it is likely that many viewers are in the opposite mood, and they expect the reviewers to be open-minded if not similarly eager. But on this occasion, I must make an exception and say that I was in no mood for "Jack Reacher." I only say this because I believe that at this time there are many in this country and around the world who share my mood and my attitude toward some of the film's subject matter.

  9. Film review: 'Jack Reacher' thriller is a bit of a reach

For fans of Lee Child's series of Jack Reacher thrillers, the decision to cast Tom Cruise as Reacher must seem like ... well ... a reach. Child's protagonist is light-haired, nearly 6 and a half feet tall, burly enough to be instantly intimidating, and laconic — the very antithesis of star Cruise's on-screen image. The character seems a far better fit for Arnold Schwarzenegger; it's hard not to speculate that Child came up with the character back in the '90s with the specific hope of creating a new franchise for the governor-to-be.

  11. 'Jack Reacher' comes up short, movie critics say

When it comes to kicking butt, Tom Cruise is an old hand. He's done it as an ace pilot in "Top Gun," a soldier-turned-samurai in "The Last Samurai," a globe-trotting super-spy in the "Mission: Impossible" movies, a futuristic cop in "Minority Report" and a different globe-trotting super-spy in "Knight and Day."

  15. Review: 'Jack Reacher' is too much of a stretch for Tom Cruise

In "Jack Reacher," the new thriller starring Tom Cruise, the crime that draws the film's reclusive ex-Army investigator out of the shadows — a sniper gunning down people on a city street — couldn't have been a worse one to land in theaters...

  17. Timing is everything for 'Jack Reacher' ★★ 1/2

Considered outside the context of the bloody December so far, "Jack Reacher" does its work sleekly and well. Writer-director Christopher McQuarrie filmed the adaptation of the Lee Child book "One Shot" (one of many Reacher adventures) in Pittsburgh, with cinematographer Caleb Deschanel lending the project a handsome, burnished sheen.
