For the third consecutive year and fifth time in the last seven years, a Connecticut squad took home the team title at the New England gymnastics championship. Woodstock Academy won its first team title at the March 10 meet at New Milford High, scoring a 146.500 team score to edge Pinkerton Academy of Derry, N.H. (146.025). Glastonbury, the 2011 New England champion, finished third with a 142.257. Woodstock Academy’s Shaila Segal won the individual all-around title at the meet. Glastonbury’s Amanda Scanlon, the 2011 New England all-around champion, was fifth. Segal was the top scorer at the meet on the uneven bars and the balance beam and her teammate Jackie Deary was the top individual in the vault competition. New Milford won the title in 2010 and Southington won consecutive titles in 2006 and 2007.
After finishing third in the individual all-around competition at the State Open in 2011, Scanlon, a junior, returned to take the title this year. Scanlon scored a 37.875 to beat runner-up Chelsea Levander of Wilton. Levander had finished second in the all-around in 2011. Scanlon tied for the individual title in the vault at the Open, was second in the uneven bars and balance beam and fourth in the floor exercise. Woodstock Academy scored a 145.075 to beat out 2011 State Open champion Glastonbury for the team title. The Tomahawks finished the meet second with a 143.625 score.
On March 3 at Pomperaug High in Southbury, three Class meet gymnastics team titles were awarded and coach Robin Deary-Fillmore left the gym with the majority of them. Deary-Fillmore coached Woodstock Academy to its second consecutive CIAC Class M title and then followed that up by coaching Killingly to the CIAC Class S title. Killingly edged RHAM-Hebron in the meet for its fifth divisional team title. Deary-Fillmore has been the head coach at Killingly for 25 years and for 17 years at Woodstock Academy.
